The New Zealand Mint is proud to present this coloured coin set celebrating a selection of 1930s aircraft.
Seen as a golden age in aviation, the 1930s was a decade when major advancement was made in both design and production. The questionably powered and flimsy aircraft of the past had progressed into powerful and sleek, modern aircraft, hailing a new era in aviation history.
This collection features 4 of the most famous racing aircraft of the period; the Gee Bee, Hughes H-1 Racer, Supermarine S-6B Floatplane and the Polikarpov I-16. Each set is presented in a finely crafted wooden collector's box which is in turn enclosed in an informative and attractive protective sleeve.
The obverse of each coin features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, sovereign of the Commonwealth and Cook Islands, along with the year of issue (2006) and the denomination of $2.
The reverse of each coin features an attractive high quality colour image of the respective aircraft in flight against a background of sky. The name of each aircraft is engraved beneath this in contour with the edge of the coin. Also engraved into the reverse is the denomination ($2) and the metal and weight specifications of the coin. This is all surrounded by a detailed border bringing out each feature and completing this finely crafted item.
Each 1930s Classic Racers coin is struck from 1oz of pure silver. No more than 6,000 of each coin will be issued by the New Zealand Mint. The coins are legal tender of the Government of the Cook Islands.
Each coin set comes with an individually numbered certificate of authenticity issued by New Zealand Mint.
