International Women’s Day is marked on 8 March every year. It is a major day of global celebration for the economic, political and social achievements of women.
Started as a political event, the holiday blended in the culture of many countries. In some celebrations, the day lost its political flavour, and became simply an occasion for men to express their sympathy and love to the women around them - somewhat similar to Western Mother’s Day and St Valentine’s Day mixed together. In others, however, the political and human rights theme as designated by the United Nations runs strong, and political and social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner.
The obverse of the coin features the Raphael Maklouf effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, sovereign of the Commonwealth and Cook Islands the year ‘2007’ and the denomination of NZ$2.00.
The reverse features an engraved symbol of women, an engraved figure eight representing the 8th of March. The image of pink tulips printed in full colour.
No more than 4,000 coins will be issued by New Zealand Mint.
Each Individual coin is presented in a quality blue leathrette case, this is accompanied by a numbered certificate. This is then packaged in a colourful outer shipper.
