About the Design

Widely recognized as an icon of Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, the cable car is a popular tourist attraction with a history spanning over 100 years.

Starting its journey at Lambton Quay in the heart of Wellington, the cable car travels through 3 tunnels before emerging in the beautiful suburb of Kelburn. Its journey terminates 120m above its starting point in the botanic gardens that overlook the harbour.

The two cars which are permanently attached to one another start from opposite ends of the line where they take on a passenger load of up to 100 people. They move at approximately 18km/h.

By 1890 Wellington’s workforce had outgrown the area surrounding the shops and offices of Lambton Quay. The hills above the city were seen as an ideal location for subsequent development, so acable car was designed by Dunedin-born engineer James Fulton to provide public transportation. This was opened in 1902 to widespread enthusiasm.

In 2000 the cable car museum was opened, commemorating the colourful history of this unique attraction which still operates today.
