See what's new in the fascinating Warriors of History coin collection

For this new release in the Warriors of History coin collection we travel to Africa and feature the mighty Zulus.

Shaka Zulu is hailed as one of the greatest military leaders in African history. Tired of the assegai — a throwing spear — Shaka Zulu introduced the iklwa, a heavy broad bladed stabbing spear. This weapon gave the warriors a huge advantage over opponents when they came up close for hand-to-hand combat.

Shaka Zulu also introduced a larger, heavier war-shield made of cowhide. Cattle from the royal herds were used to make the shields. These shields were owned by the King and not issued to warriors except in time of war. The warriors used the shield's left side to hook the enemy's shield to the right, exposing the enemy's ribs for a fatal spear stab. The shields were colour coded with younger regiments having mostly black shields and older regiments having more white on the shield. This allowed a Zulu general to identify the different units on the battlefield easily.

Shaka is also thought to be the first to use the ‘buffalo horns’ military formation, with its three elements: the ‘horns’, younger, quicker-moving troops who encircle and pin the enemy; the ‘chest’, prime fighters to deliver the finishing blow; and the ‘loins’, war veterans with their back to the battle, protecting against any additional attackers.

This attack formation brought large numbers of warriors swiftly and efficiently into hand to hand combat with their opponents and, along with the Zulu combination of iklwa and shield, proved devastating.
