Continue the Wildlife of Nicaragua Collection with the lazy Sloth

The Three-Toed Sloth 1oz Silver Coin is the second coin to be released in our thrilling new collection – Wildlife of Nicaragua – which highlights fascinating native species from this amazing South American country.

The second release features the indolent Three-Toed Sloth. The sloth is the world's slowest mammal, so sedentary that algae grow on its furry coat. Its life revolves around sleeping and eating leaves, shoots and fruit in its tall tree home. Its body is adapted to hang by its limbs; with large curved claws to keep a strong grip on tree branches. Its greenish colour and sluggish habits provide an effective camouflage in the Nicaraguan forest canopy.

Even though sloths spend most of their time hanging upside down in trees, they are great swimmers. They can move three times faster in water than on land. Unlike many other mammals, sloths have the capacity to slow down their heartbeat to one third of its normal rhythm, so they can hold the breath for longer.

Like most of us, sloths love their sleep. Even though wild sloths in South and Central America have roughly the same sleep routines as humans (eight to nine hours), those in captivity can sleep for 20 hours a day.

The coin design imaginatively combines a striking coloured image of the sloth amongst a detailed engraving of its native forest habitat.

The releases in this Wildlife of Nicaragua collection will be encased in a modern wooden box featuring Nicaragua's Coat of Arms. The coin can be found inside, nestled in a cream velvet alongside the numbered Certificate of Authenticity written in both English and Spanish. The outer box design also complements the Nicaraguan wildlife theme.
