We are excited to share the first coin in a new officially licensed coin collection for one of Disney's greatest animated classic, Alice In Wonderland!
The film tells the tale of Alice, who chases after a White Rabbit only to be led through a keyhole into Wonderland. Through her journey in the bizarre Wonderland, she ends up celebrating an ‘unbirthday’ with the March Hare and Mad Hatter at their tea party before having a final showdown with the Queen of Hearts and her army of playing cards. Thankfully, Alice awakens from her dream to the recitations of her sister and the purring of her cat.
The film had been on Walt Disney’s mind since 1933 but the project was shelved after Paramount Pictures made a live-action version. He later had Hollywood artist and designer, David Hall, create concepts for an all-animated film. However, World War II intervened and it wasn’t until the late 1940s that work began again in earnest.
Finally released in 1951, it was not well received by everyone on its initial release; however, the film proved to be ahead of its time and is now well-loved and enjoyed by many.
This 1oz pure silver coin features a coloured image from the movie of the peculiar world of Wonderland. It shows a shrunken Alice walking amongst the Bread-and-Butterflies - which are butterflies with wings of bread spread with butter! The delightful design also incorporates beautifully engraved leaves, using both a frost and mirror finish.
The coin arrives in its own acrylic display block and is placed in complementary packaging along with the Certificate of Authenticity. This certificate, along with the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, confirms the coin as legal tender.
With only 2,000 coins being produced, this whimsical coin would make a special addition to any Disney fan’s collection!
