Today sees the launch of our second coin to celebrate the 80th Anniversary of Disney’s animated feature film from 1940, Fantasia. he 1oz pure silver coin shows an image from a well-known, delightful segment entitled “Dance of the Hours”.
The “Dance of the Hours,” was originally a 19th century Italian ballet piece which was made popular after it was recast in Fantasia. The delightful segment involves pirouetting ostriches, elephants, crocodiles and hippopotamuses!
The two characters seen in colour on the coin are Hyacinth Hippo and Ben Ali Gator. Hyacinth is a graceful hippo who falls in love with Ben when her pursues her. She is distinguished from her servant hippos by her yellow tutu, while her servants wear pink. Ben Ali is distinguished from his rival alligators by his cap with a feather. On the engraved background is Elephanchine, a soft-footed elephant dancer, who can be seen enjoying their dance from afar. The obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and is legal tender in Niue.
The coin is placed in unique book-style packaging that continues the anniversary theme by incorporating artwork from the film’s original posters. A Certificate of Authenticity is printed inside the packaging along with confirmation of the coin’s number in the limited mintage of 1,940 coins – to reflect the year the film premiered!
