Remember the game that took the world by storm in the 1992? Introducing a limited-edition collectible celebrating one of the most popular video games of the ‘90s, Mortal Kombat.
Mortal Kombat began as a 2D arcade fighting game and is renowned as the first to use digitized characters and blood (as opposed to the hand-animated, more cartoon-like graphics of other games at that time). The mythical monsters and powers were quickly latched onto by kids of the era and the mix of realism and violence appealed to many - propelling Mortal Kombat to the height of popularity.
An example of the game's innovations was the Fatality, a special finishing move executed against a dying opponent to create an even more gruesome death accompanied by the memorable line “Finish Him/Her”. A back story and lore to its mystical, multi-dimensional world also helped to earn it a cult following.
This legal tender 1oz pure silver coin embodies the striking game logo. The words ‘Mortal Kombat’ and the mythical dragon are engraved against the fiery red and yellow coloured background colours that are so synonymous with the game. The obverse of the coin carries the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
To further enhance this precious collectible, it is housed inside a specially designed Mortal Kombat-themed box which replicates an arcade cabinet! It includes colourful images on the sides of three characters from the original game: Scorpion, Raiden and Sub-Zero. Confirmation of the coin’s authenticity is printed on its base. The game logo and all seven original characters feature on the front.
Officially licensed by Warner Brothers there are only 2,020 available worldwide, to reflect the year of issue. As the perfect memento for gaming enthusiasts and those who grew up playing Mortal Kombat, make sure you fight for yours!
