SUPERMAN was the hottest selling character in comics from his first appearance in Action Comics #1 in 1938. Although he was clearly the star of Action Comics, other comic characters appeared in that publication, but fans demanded a book that contained ONLY SUPERMAN. Later, in May 1939, the first all SUPERMAN comic appeared – SUPERMAN #1!
This comic also boasts another first, a CGC-graded 8.0 copy sold for $5.3 million earlier this year, making it the most expensive comic book on record!
SUPERMAN #1 tells the story of how planet Krypton exploded and how an infant SUPERMAN was placed inside a rocket and sent to Earth. The story later revolves around him trying to get a job at a newspaper (as his alter ego Clark Kent) but due to a lack of experience isn’t hired.
Eventually, he goes to a prison where a riot is taking place, Clark then uses this information to get hired at the paper. This is the start of an ongoing ‘detective style’ story told within the comics which leads to a retelling of stories from Action Comics.
This coin features a coloured image of the iconic SUPERMAN #1 comic cover from 1939. To mimic the comic book, it has been crafted into a rectangular shape and is uniquely coloured on all four sides to represent the spine and pages. As legal tender, the obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth ll. For an extra touch, a turning page has also been engraved!
Created in partnership with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, this special piece arrives nestled in black velvet inside a themed, custom-designed box. The large window on the front ensures you can show it off in your collection. Printed on the back of the box, is a Certificate of Authenticity and the coin’s unique number in the limited mintage of 5,000.
