Today we can reveal a new coin series, Cinema Masterpieces, celebrating Disney’s beloved classic animated films. The first in the series honours Pinocchio. This was Disney’s second animated feature film, released in 1940. With such a wealth of incredible scenes to choose from, we needed a 3oz coin with a generous 60mm diameter to do it justice!
This magnificent pure silver coin features a coloured image of Pinocchio with his creator, Geppetto as the main image. Underneath, a supporting montage of animation ‘gold’ can be seen in the engraved silver film roll. In the film itself, Pinocchio, the wooden marionette, is magically brought to life by the Blue Fairy, with the promise that he can become a real boy if he earns it. Through his efforts, he is guided by his friend and conscience, Jiminy Cricket, and meets a host of unsavoury characters! He ultimately finds redemption by saving Geppetto from Monstro, the whale. On the obverse of the coin is the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, confirming it as legal tender.
Naturally, Jiminy Cricket features prominently on this release, taking pride of place on the box with Pinocchio. Inside the box, the coin is protected by a large acrylic capsule - as you will want to take it out of the black velvet surround to admire the detail! The Certificate of Authenticity is on the back of the box, which also houses the coin’s unique number in the limited mintage of 2,000 coins. So, you may need to pull some strings to get yours!
