The towering Tyrannosaurus Rex features on the first release in the exciting new Dinosaur coin collection struck in 1oz pure silver. The name Tyrannosaurus Rex comes from Greek and Latin words meaning ‘Tyrant Lizard King’. The dinosaur roamed the planet during the late Cretaceous Period, over 65 million years ago, and more than 20 almost-complete T Rex skeletons have been found to date. This fossil evidence shows that Tyrannosaurus was a mighty 40 feet (12 meters) long and about 15 to 20 feet (4.6 to 6 meters) tall.
It was undoubtedly one of the largest meat-eating dinosaurs that ever lived. Everything about this ferocious predator, from its thick, heavy skull to its 4-foot-long (1.2-meter-long) jaw, was designed for maximum bone-crushing action. Its strong thighs and long, powerful tail helped it move quickly. Its two-fingered forearms could probably seize prey, but they were actually too short to reach its mouth!
The reverse of the coin shows a coloured representation of this imposing dinosaur battling two small raptors. The raptors and prehistoric landscape background are skilfully engraved for contrast. The coin is antiqued for further effect. The obverse features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the coin is legal tender in Niue.
The coin is presented in a quality coin case and themed outer box, which also displays an image of this imposing dinosaur amongst a background of rock. A numbered Certificate of Authenticity is included in the coin case confirming the limited mintage of only 2,000 coins.
