We are thrilled to say that we are now officially producing THE LORD OF THE RINGS™ gold and silver collectible coins under license from Warner Brothers. We are kicking off this collection with the map of Middle Earth. A fine place to start!
The Middle Earth map was one of the key components of J.R.R. Tolkien’s (1892–1973) The LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. It shows the imaginary world in which the story is set, although most of the events in Tolkien's stories take place in the north-west of Middle Earth. The style of the map varies between illustration and cartography and has an archaic air about it. It may be a functional map, but still has an eye to grace and beauty.
Our Middle Earth map is printed in colour onto pure silver, which has been rolled flat and is, in fact, still a legal tender coin! For contrast, the sea and place names have been left uncoloured, so they sparkle as the light moves across.
Tolkien’s map was folded into the back of the first LORD OF THE RINGS novel and later refined by the illustrator Pauline Baynes into a stand-alone poster. Tolkien believed that there should be picturesque maps, providing more than a mere index to what is said in the text. His maps therefore have three functions: to help the author construct a consistent plot; to guide the reader; and through the "picturesque" to lead the reader into the imagined world of Middle Earth.
Arriving in a custom-made themed carrier, this unique silver foil is protected by an acrylic capsule - to display both sides beautifully. The coin’s unique number in the 2,000 mintage is noted on the carrier. A truly stunning silver collectible for any THE LORD OF THE RINGS fan.
