Coin Story
The Battle of Trafalgar took place off Cape Trafalgar on 21 October, 1805. Its outcome ensured that the French would never invade Britain and confirmed Britain's naval supremacy — which lasted for another century.
Admiral Lord Nelson’s twenty seven ships waited off the southwest coast of Spain for the thirty three Franco-Spanish ships to emerge. Nelson’s winning plan, in a change from usual naval tactics, was to split into two columns to break through the enemy line and overwhelm the centre and rear sections of the enemy's fleet.
At dawn on 21 October Nelson’s HMS Victory hoisted the famous signal 'England Expects That Every Man Will Do His Duty'. Nelson's faith in the superior gunnery and ship handling skills of the British crews was founded and, with the capture of eighteen ships, the enemy surrendered.
