Coin Story

Japan's capital, Tokyo, was originally a small fishing village known as Edo. It became the nation's political centre in 1603, and its name was changed to Tokyo (to "east" and kyo "capital") after the arrival of the Emperor in 1868, making it the imperial capital too.

It is the world's most populous metropolis, home to more than 13 million people. A dizzying whirl of activity: offering a seemingly unlimited choice of shopping, entertainment, culture and dining. Undoubtedly the country's pop culture laboratory it also houses excellent museums, historic temples and gardens. It boasts attractions such as the Imperial Palace, Tsukiji Fish Market, Tokyo Skytree and the Temple of Senso-ji.

Shopping has been elevated to an art in Tokyo; in fact, many people list shopping as a hobby! You can find some of the more cutting-edge fashions in Harajuku where people play dress up to the extreme. And there's much more to the country's food than sushi. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo the most Michelin stars of any city in the world.
