Coin Story

Located deep in the rugged south-western mountains of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Petra was once a thriving centre of trade. The city was capital of the powerful Nabataean Empire between 400 B.C. and 106 A.D.

History has it that Petra was founded as early as 312 B.C., however, by 700 A.D. with the end of Byzantine rule, the city had been all but forgotten due to earthquakes and a shift in trade routes.

Carved directly into the vibrant red, white, and pink sandstone cliffs, this prehistoric city was soon after abandoned and lost to the Western world for hundreds of years.

In 1812 a Swiss explorer Johann Ludwig Burckhardt, disguised in Bedouin costume, infiltrated the region and discovered an empty city of mystery. Walking through its abandoned doors, he was amazed by its architecture and complex infrastructure.

Today, Petra is an icon of Jordan, as well as the country’s most-visited tourist attraction. Immortalised on film, and in games and books, the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985, and has been named one of the modern Seven Wonders of the World.
