Our partnership with Warner Bros. allows us to bring you a diverse range of coins and so naturally we ‘jumped’ at the chance to honour the basketball-themed movie Space Jam!
Originally released on 15 November 1996, we are celebrating this epic movie’s 25th Anniversary with a 1oz pure silver coin. At the time it was made, the animation effects used had never been attempted on screen before. Mixing live action with eye-popping animation it tells the story of Swackhammer, an evil alien theme park owner, who needs a new attraction at Moron Mountain. When his gang, the Nerdlucks, head to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes to be that new attraction, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of five all-star NBA basketball players -- so Bugs gets some help from another superstar of the sport! The film was a box office success, grossing over $250 million worldwide and becoming the highest-grossing basketball film of all time as well as the tenth highest-grossing film of 1996!
This coin shows five of the Tune Squad members - jersey number 1, Bugs Bunny; 2, Daffy Duck; 9, Sylvester; 10, Lola Bunny; and exclamation point, Tasmanian Devil! These delightfully coloured characters are set against an engraved and frosted background – which you may recognise as being part of the Looney Tunes logo! The obverse has also been cleverly designed to resemble a basketball while including the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to confirm it as legal tender.
The themed box also includes the official anniversary logo and shows more images from the movie. The Certificate of Authenticity is on the back with the coin’s unique number in the mintage. Inside, the coin is further protected by an acrylic block that can be used for display. Or just leave it in the box and view it through the large window. This one is a surely a slam dunk!
